South Korean Music Sales Exploded the First Half of 2022

South Korean music sales exploded by 31.7 percent during the first half of 2022, the Korean creative content agency reveals — behind only film, pulling ahead of all other forms of entertainment (comics, games, broadcasting, publishing, and animation).

Korean Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) published its report for 2022’s first half, revealing incredible growth in South Korea’s music industry. Revenues grew by 31.7% year-on-year, behind only films, where sales increased 58.1%.

Additionally, music export revenues increased 26.2% year-on-year thanks to K-Pop’s continued international success with artists such as BTS and Blackpink. The Korean entertainment sector as a whole has experienced tremendous growth in the first half of 2022, with fans eager to return to movie theaters and live performances.

While KOCCA’s report only covers the first half of 2022, some of BTS’ most significant accomplishments for the year occurred later, which speaks to the group’s staying power. They were the IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year in 2020 and 2021, and the June 2022 release of their album Proof brought the already-successful group even more acclaim. Their live-streamed concert in Busan attracted more than 49 million viewers in October.

2022 has also been a banner year for Blackpink, whose international success has indeed rocketed them to the top of South Korean pop stars. They became the first music artist to reach 75 million YouTube subscribers, and both they and BTS held official YouTube Shorts challenges to encourage fan participation.

K-Pop has seen such success globally, thanks largely to the prevalence of streaming, enabling groups to cast a wider net and gain more fans in the West. But physical album sales for the genre have been similarly impressive.

Researchers at South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Securities claim that in May alone, nearly 10 million K-Pop albums were sold. Notably, 48% of those were artists signed under Hybe, including Seventeen and TXT, who had just released new albums that month and accounted for a large portion of the sales.

Pusha T Confirms He’s Cut All Ties With Kanye West

Pusha T has publicly cut ties with Kanye West’s former record label G.O.O.D. Music, which he first joined in 2010, and remained with through the release of his 2022 Grammy-nominated album “It’s Almost Dry.”

In 2015, Pusha became the president of G.O.O.D., but in a new interview with XXL, he confirmed his affiliation with the label was cut following West’s outspoken descent into antisemitism. The company’s parent label, Def Jam, ended its business relationship with G.O.O.D. in late October and clarified that its working relationship with West ended in 2021. Pusha now shares a 50/50 deal directly with Def Jam for his music and is under his own label, Heir Wave Music Group.

The rapper told the publication that he hasn’t spoken to West since he articulated his disappointment with him in a November interview. “I was still on tour. I just expressed myself. I express myself to him a lot. He expressed his thoughts to me,” he said. “And he got off the phone saying, ‘Thank you. I know you don’t agree with me, but you never kill me in the public. And some people can’t wait to do that.'”

When asked about West’s appearances on far-right shows and podcasts, he responded that it was “nothing to tap dance around. It’s wrong. Period. But to me, it’s just me and him having a difference of opinion yet again.”

He continued: “If you ain’t with it, you ain’t down. And I ain’t with it. I’m not budging on that. I’m not with it. I heard about this new stuff [on “Infowars“]. I don’t know. It’s something that just sort of tells me he’s not well, at the same time. I will say that. It’s going to places where it’s no way to move around it.”

He recalled having disagreed with West in 2016 following his public support for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign: “People gotta remember, too. This isn’t new for me, when it comes to disagreeing with him politically and things like that.

The Grind Music Review — “Tweet” By Taurie

Summer 2022, two years after the first pandemic shutdown, the world started opening its doors, yearning and searching for hope, change and a brighter promise of the future.

Taurie delivered as expected, only better this time, with her upcoming single ‘“Tweet”’. “Tweet” starts off with (you guessed it) birds chirping into a fun upbeat musical arrangement, transcending to the lyrics which Taurie wrote within an hour, at the recording studio.

Taurie writes all her songs with the ease of the moment and melodies that lure the listener into her world of curiosity and grace. “Tweet” is about a young bird ready to fly out of the nest to see the world full of unexpected experiences. Little birdie is anxious, excited, and yet scared of the unknown. She turns to her momma for encouragement and direction. Her momma encourages her to be strong and have faith in herself. Momma also assures her that she will be there for little birdie.

Taurie uses her sultry voice that has earned her two music awards and a home on the Billboard and iTunes charts, to deliver different emotions in this lighthearted but very realistic questions of where young people trying to find themselves are. She said that the song is particularly personal for her because of how the relationship and bond with her momager has matured allowing her to cultivate their growth through the past three years of her music career. She whispers that it was emotional writing and producing the song.

The journey to where they are today had problems and promises which they both endured through time, and still growing. Though the beat of “Tweet” is a feel-good summer song, it curves into an undeniable seriousness of the pulse of humanity today, casting thoughts that resonate with everyone going through a new phase of growth. To understand “Tweet”, you must listen to not just the sway inducing beat, but the soft voice floating through the rhythm with thought provoking lyrics.

The world is ready for a fun lighthearted song from this award-winning superstar, exhilarating, fun and yes, summery! The world is ready for Taurie with her unique and sultry signature of music. “Tweet” is a long-awaited new chapter in Taurie’s career, and a promise of so much more to come. We cannot wait to hear what is next in Taurie’s musical bag of pleasant surprises.

Moneybagg Yo And Kodak Black Team Up For Heartfelt New Video “Rocky Road”

Memphis superstar Moneybagg Yodrops “Rocky Road,” a heartfelt, Kodak Black-assisted new single that affirms the pair’s status as the faces of modern, complex street rap. “Rocky Road” also arrives with an evocative video. Cruising over emotive keys, Kodak kicks things off with a declaration of loyalty: “Tryna get to my hoe but the Perkys got me froze / Been doing my baby momma wrong and leaving her at home / I cannot leave you on your own, we made this child together.” For his part,Moneybagg injects memories of the hustle and damaged romance: “Out there standing by the pole, selling dope to buy some clothes / Cause I knew that attract the hoes, until one left my heart so cold / I just didn’t know no better made me hard on the next forever.” Soul-baring yet of the streets, “Rocky Road” is Moneybagg and Kodak at their best.

The video also dwells in that zone. Equal parts gritty, evocative, thoughtful, and real, the Young Chang-directed clip spins a familiar narrative as a man who’s already balancing life’s complexities finds himself at a crossroads: how to respond to another man’s reckless violence. The two rappers bear witness, occupying a perspective both within the scene and adjacent enough to have eyes on the bigger picture. It’s a space Bagg’s held down for a long time now.

Falkon Entertainment And Ebony Studios Team For ‘Sincerely, Los Angeles’ Documentary Honoring Kobe And Gianna Bryant

Sincerely, Los Angeles, a colorful, intimate, and inspiring love letter from Los Angeles to NBA Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, will be produced by a new joint venture between premier production company Falkon Entertainment and Ebony Studios. The feature-length documentary, directed by Patrick Green and produced by Dexton Deboree and Wondwossen Dikran of Falkon in collaboration with Someone Great Pictures, tells heartfelt stories about everyday people affected by the tragic death of the Lakers legend, as well as a look at LA’s most inspiring mural artists and cultural figures helping each other cope with the loss and remembering Kobe and Gianna. The video follows how these homage shrines grew into a global movement that started in Los Angeles and now spans the globe, demonstrating that Kobe’s impact will live on in our hearts and city walls forever.“The impact of Kobe’s passing can never be fully articulated or properly emphasized, because it is such a deep, complex, profound and highly personal emotional experience for so many people around the world and if you’re an Angeleno, it goes deeper than that. Even though he was a stranger to me, in many ways I had suffered that loss, just the same and I know so many others around the world felt their own version of the same thing,” says Dexton Deboree, CEO of Falkon and visionary behind Ja Morant’s PROMISELAND, Will Smith’s Best Shape of My Life and Shaquille O’Neil’s The Game Plan. “I’m grateful, honored and inspired to help Patrick and his team bring the film further to life, support his vision and collaborate closely with our partners at Ebony to pay homage and do proper justice to the lasting legacy that Kobe and Gigi had on us all, through the unique and beautiful art that has been created in their loving, dedicated and more than fond memories.”

The film, which is set in Covid-19 and depicts people’s fear of the future, the loss of a real-life superhero, and racial turmoil in the streets, is very much a time capsule of 2020. During the city’s lockdown, award-winning filmmaker Patrick Green traveled throughout the city, documenting how a diverse group of artists and citizens from Boyle Heights to Burbank, Watts to the Westside, separated by class, culture, and concrete, have taken it upon themselves to keep Kobe and Gigi’s legacy alive by painting their images on walls across the Southland. It’s something they must do for the sake of themselves and the city. “For a lot of Angelenos like myself, Kobe’s passing was like losing a North Star and since then, we’ve all experienced the loss of loved ones, freedom, and a sense of purpose. As I navigated my way through this new normal, I kept seeing larger than life Kobe murals pop-up around LA and saw that they became a place of refuge for people to gather around and relive memories with friends, family, and complete strangers” says Patrick Green, Award-winning Director. “I felt empowered to make a film that captured Kobe’s spirit just like the muralists had done and as I filmed these stories about ordinary people doing extraordinary things for themselves and their community, I began to realize that these past couple years weren’t just about loss but finding the hero within. Who better than the Black Mamba to force us to put on our big boy pants and start living again?  As a POC filmmaker, it’s an honor and privilege to partner with Dexton and Falkon and have ‘Sincerely, Los Angeles’ as the debut project from the newly launched Ebony Studios.”

Ramzy Da Plug, This Year’s Artist To Watch

Ramzy Da Plug is one of the trending names in the list of hip-hop sensations that audiences are looking forward to. The artist hailing from Las Cruces, New Mexico born Frankie Ramzy Jr. is one of the brightest profiles in the hip-hop industry with many eyes on him.

Ramzy Da Plug astounded the music scene with his release “Certain Situations”. Ramzy, who has always dreamt of becoming one of the best hip-hop rappers in the field, gained significant attention with his big release. Since then, the artist has been highly motivated on becoming the best there is. However, it’s not the struggle but the story that has been amusing as Ramzy Da Plug isn’t someone who started off learning music from any academy or an official source.

Getting an up-close and personal interview with the artist himself, Frankie revealed the fascinating journey that compelled him to this way. "I didn't start into music on my own. However, it was my best friend Chris that motivated me into it. It wasn't like a classroom or a motivational lecture. It all started back at home when we use to get together and battle each other to pass time," he said.

“It was a part of our community and everyone would do their best to beat others. But Chris was something else! He would beat anyone. His skill and the ability to freestyle was something that always intrigued me, and I wished to achieve or perhaps exceed that one day,” he added.

When asked about his music creation and how he works, Ramzy Da Plug told sources that he works mostly alone as it helps him create the music that would attract an audience. "Most people often argue that creating music doesn't require you to be depressed. However, that's for them to think. For me, creating music when depressed is the best way to let out your emotions. I prefer working alone since I feel there's no one at that time but me to criticize or judge my work and my feelings," he stated.

Asking about his future, sources wanted to get insight into what the artist planned on doing next. Frankie Ramzy Jr. seemed quite motivated in this stance, illustrating confidence he told our sources that he’s working on the retail side of the business for now.

However, speaking of collaborations, he mentioned working with several of the big guns in the rapping industry such as Future, Moneybagg, and many more but spoke fondly of Lil Wayne, stating that he is the best-talented artist that he wants to work with.

Overall, Ramzy Da Plug has been working on his music but giving most of his time to his 2 retail stores, making business ends work. As for his stance on his future, he's looking forward to making an impact by showing the best of his work, which most of his audience anxiously awaits.

UK Government Launches New Probe Into The Music Streaming Market

The UK government’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has formally launched a new study to examine the music streaming market.

The announcement follows on from the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee’s ‘Economics Of Music Streaming’ report, which was published last summer and led to the government calling on the CMA to start an investigation into the matter.

The government has today (January 27) announced that the CMA “will examine the music streaming market, from creator to consumer, paying particular attention to the roles played by record labels and music streaming services”.

The CMA’s assessment will see them considering “whether innovation is being stifled and if any firms hold excessive power”, and aims to “build a deeper understanding of how firms in the market influence listeners’ choices and experiences”.

“While focussing on potential harm to consumers, the CMA will also assess whether any lack of competition between music companies could affect the musicians, singers and songwriters whose interests are intertwined with those of music lovers,” a statement adds.

The CMA, which has also said that it “will consider what action may be necessary” if the probe encounters any “problems”, is now inviting comments from “consumers, businesses and other interested parties” on any of the issues raised in its Statement of Scope and the accompanying Market Study Notice.

Andrea Coscelli, Chief Executive of the CMA, said: “Whether you’re into Bowie, Beethoven or Beyoncé, most of us now choose to stream our favourite music.

“A vibrant and competitive music streaming market not only serves the interests of fans and creators but helps support a diverse and dynamic sector, which is of significant cultural and economic value to the UK.

"I've recorded so many songs that I've never released"

Janet Jackson has hinted that a new track featured in her recent self-titled documentary could be set for an official release.

The new Janet Jackson series, which premiered in the UK earlier this week, offers an unprecedented look into the star’s life and lengthy career.

As reported previously, an unreleased song titled ‘Love I Love’ soundtracks the closing credits of the final episode. “You got that love I love,” Jackson is heard singing in the snippet.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon yesterday evening (February 2), the vocalist was asked if fans will get to hear the track in its entirety and whether it was “hinting” at new material to come.

“It’s so funny because that’s… it was a song that I recorded, like, three years ago,” Jackson replied. “And, in the documentary, we thought, ‘Oh, this would be cool to put this song right here in this moment, this piece in the documentary’.

“And, everyone started reacting to it. So I dunno. We’ll just have to see. Maybe it’ll be a single.”

When quizzed on if there are more unreleased cuts in her archive that could potentially see the light of day, the star explained: “I’ve recorded so many songs that I’ve never released. So, we’ll see.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Jackson said she was “very thankful” for the positive response to her new docuseries. “It was all such a surprise to me,” she told host Jimmy Fallon.

“I was not expecting any of it. I was just really so, so worried that people would find it boring, to be quite honest with you.”

Janet Jackson is available on Sky Documentaries and NOW in the UK. An official synopsis reads: “Janet has enjoyed immense success but also seen incredible tragedy.

“We could do a documentary just on the making of the duet,” Lane told Variety of Parton and Clarkson’s team-up.

Speaking of how the new version of ‘9 To 5’ differs from the much-loved original, co-director/producer Camille Hardman explained: “The first iteration, Dolly’s original version was very upbeat. There was a lot of hope I would say in the song.

“And this version is just a little bit melancholic,” she said, acknowledging the film’s themes of inequality.

Lane went on to tell the outlet that Parton had dubbed the new collaboration ‘9 To 5: The Slow Version’, saying that it’s “definitely slowed down and more haunting”. He added: “Kelly — you can’t believe how she changes it, too. It’s really mind blowing.”

Meanwhile, Dolly Parton recently shared the details of her new album ‘Run, Rose, Run’, which serves as a companion to her upcoming debut novel of the same name.

Previewed by the song ‘Big Dreams And Faded Jeans’, the 12-track record is due to arrive on March 4 via Butterfly Records in partnership with Ingrooves/UMG.
